Teaching advanced cyanotype to Tiffany Roubert /
I had the pleasure of teaching Leica-endorsed French photographer and videographer Tiffany Roubert in my London studio during a two-day advanced cyanotype workshop.
Tiffany is based in London and is known for her poetic, film-based storytelling. Working with luxury hotels, tourism boards, and travel brands, she captures not only the architecture of a place, but the feelings it evokes — images on film and Super 8 that invite nostalgia, wonder, and a sense of escapism.
Over the course of the workshop, we explored ways to move beyond the deep blue of the traditional cyanotype — a colour Tiffany has never been fond of. I guided her through alternative toning methods that shift the palette into softer, more atmospheric tones, and then introduced watercolour techniques that can be layered over toned prints. Tiffany also chose to leave the brushstrokes visible along the edges of her prints, embracing their painterly quality and aligning the process with the expressive style that defines her wider photographic work.
It was a joy to mentor Tiffany and see her creative voice expand into this historic process — reimagined in a way that is entirely her own.
Alternative Process Photography in London
This advanced cyanotype workshop is part of my wider mentoring programme in alternative photographic processes, including gum bichromate printing, salt printing, and hybrid analogue-digital workflows. Based in Hackney, London, these sessions are designed for photographers who want to expand their creative toolkit, experiment with toning and hand-finishing methods, and create handcrafted photographic prints with unique character.
“What a beautiful experience it was! Thank you again Ian, now spending all my days creating my very own 😍”
