Salt Printing Workshops / in Ramsgate | NEO-PICTORIAL SCHOOL of PHOTOGRAPHY
I recently led a weekend of salt printing workshops at the NEO-PICTORIAL SCHOOL of PHOTOGRAPHY in Ramsgate, alongside an incredible lineup of artists and photographers. From Thursday to Sunday, 10 students joined us for an immersive, hands-on experience in alternative photographic processes.
We kicked off the weekend by creating digital negatives, giving students the foundation they needed for their salt printing and cyanotype sessions. Over Friday and Saturday, students developed a deep understanding of salt printing techniques, exploring both the technical and artistic possibilities. In the evenings, we hosted inspiring talks from renowned photographers and curators, including Mick Williamson, David George, Spencer Rowell, Ingrid Christie, Angela Chalmers, myself, and curator Zelda Cheatle. These sessions offered invaluable insights into the art of photography and alternative processes.
Student feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Krystyna shared, “Being able to learn from you all was such a gift.” Kathryn, who also assisted during the course, said, “I enjoyed it massively, great company and such great opportunities to try stuff out and get it done.” She also joked, “Enjoyed being Debbie McGee to Ian Phillips-McLaren’s Paul Daniels, creating pure salt print magic!”—a lovely touch to the fun and collaborative spirit of the weekend.
On Saturday, we shared hand-cooked meals, fostering camaraderie and creative discussions. The weekend culminated in a critique and exhibition of the students’ prints, showcasing the exceptional work produced during the workshop.
It was a rewarding experience for everyone involved, and I’m excited to continue offering salt printing workshops and sessions in other alternative photographic processes. If you’re interested in learning these historic techniques, get in touch to book your spot for upcoming workshops.
