About

contemporary art photography artist
Ian Phillips McLaren (b. 1960) is a British contemporary artist, his varied practice combines contemporary and 19th century photographic processes, video, sculpture, performance and animation.

His body of work examines dementia as a state of being, memory, personal identity and the construction of self in our visual culture, portraiture and self-representation.

Ian’s current work, The ‘Self’ & The ‘Other’ is an exploration of the ‘Self’ through the lens of ancient Roman portraiture – The ‘Other’ referring to the ways in which identities are formed.

“By combining traditional 5×4 inch analogue paper negatives of my self with hybrid digital negatives of ancient Roman portraits and fragments, I’m re-imagining the historical self-portrait, in a similar vein to how the Romans re-imagined (Hellenistic) Greek art for their own purposes”.

Celtic / Atlantic Rainforest ‘Fractured Whispers’

My new project that I’ve been researching for the last year or so, I’ve finaly got out and about and taken some shots.

In “Fractured Whispers,” I pay homage to the Celtic-Atlantic rainforests, myths, folklore, and imagination. Inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien and the ancient wisdom of druidic lore, I aim to unveil the hidden narratives that reside within these ethereal landscapes, beckoning viewers to traverse the threshold of the mundane and delve into the mystical.

As I wander through the moss-laden canopies, I become acutely aware of the subtle presence of faces hidden amongst the trees. These arboreal visages, appear as whispers from another realm, inviting us to explore the delicate balance between reality and myth, glimpses of the extraordinary in the seemingly ordinary.

Below is a sneak peak of the first digital images which will be turned into digital negatives and printed as hand made Gum Bichromae prints with pigments collected from the rainforest itself.

Through gum printing, I infuse each image with the very essence of the rainforest itself. By using foraged pigments, derived from the forest floor, a symbiotic relationship emerges between art and nature. The resulting prints become a conduit, bridging the tangible and the intangible, the seen and the unseen, offering viewers a glimpse into the ancient heart of the rainforest. “Fractured Whispers” rekindles our connection to nature, urging protection of these dwindling rainforest fragments. Echoing timeless wisdom, it guides us to understand our place within the natural world.

Beneath the roof of sleeping leaves, the dream of leaves unfold.
J.R.R. Tolkien
